Ethics and Strategies for Good Practice

When I think of ethics, my mind immediately goes to the business world. I guess I do not really think about the ethics involved for being a good student or person. As a peer mentor, I will come across situations where I will need to use good ethics to get through the situation. Some times doing the right thing is not always the easiest but in the end  a person will be glad he or she did do the right thing. I believe that all the peer mentors do use good practices and have good morals. The book had great guidelines to help us use our morals to so we can practice good ethics.

The situations we came up with in class when Chelsee was leading discussion made me really think about what I would do next year if these situations came up. Some of the situations were easier to handle than others like social media. For me, the hardest situation would have to be dealing with someone I do not like. Generally, I tend to like almost every person I meet so I do not feel like this situation would come up but since I do not have a lot of experience working with people I do not like, handling the situation might be hard.  It is difficult to try hide your dislike of someone but as a peer mentor I will have to treat everyone equally and with respect. The way I would approach this situation would be to find the good qualities that person may possess and to try not to focus on the bad qualities. If I am still having difficulties, I would go talk to one of our supervisors to see what I could do to either fix the situation or to leave it.

As the semester is winding down, I feel like I am a lot more prepared to be a peer mentor than I was at the beginning of the semester.  I feel that the situations we do in class are one of the best ways to prepare ourselves for the fall semester.

  1. Great post, Liz! This past week's lesson also made me really think long and hard about our role as a peer mentor in the fall. It really "hit me" as to what kinds of things we may deal with as a mentor. Nevertheless, this will be a great learning experience for us all. For trying to get a long with someone you don't like, that is a different story all in its own! I feel it may depend on the severity of the relationship; however, I do agree with you that it will be a difficult situation.

By the way, great job teaching this week! :)

  2. Liz,

I also never really thought of how ethics pertains to myself as a peer mentor and student until this chapter. I now understand that having good ethics is a huge part of being a successful peer mentor in the fall. I agree that it will be hard to work with a student we may not like but like you said it is important to remember the good things about them instead of focusing on the negative. This semester has helped me grow as a person and I also feel much more prepared for peer mentoring in the fall.

    See you on Thursday!

  3. I feel a lot more prepared than I did at the beginning of the semester as well Liz! I was kind of the in the same boat as you were regarding the topic of ethics. I didn't think much about it in regards to everyday decision making and when Chelsee asked us to come up with ideas the only I think I could think of was cheating. Boy was I surprised at everything we could encounter! But I feel a lot better about handling it all now though :)
    good post Liz!

  4. I am so glad that you brought up feeling more prepared! I was having a meltdown towards the middle of the semester feeling like I wasn't going to be prepared enough for this and that it was just overwhelming to me. Now that I have had time to really reflect and think about all of the things we have learned I definitely feel more prepared as well. I think that having ethics towards the end was a good choice because it allowed us to use all of the knowledge we had learned previously to make decisions on what to do in our particular situations. Good post!
    Nicole :)
